AVEVA PI System

AVEVA PI System (formerly OSIsoft PI System) is the dominant operations data management platform in heavy industry, deployed across 14,000+ sites in 127 countries. In mining, PI System serves as the system of record for all operational data — ingesting time-series data from process control systems, remote sensors, IIoT devices, and SCADA systems via hundreds of native connectivity options. Core components include PI Server (data archive and asset framework), PI Vision (browser-based visualisation dashboards), PI DataLink (Excel integration for ad-hoc analysis), Asset Analytics (streaming calculations), and Event Frames (contextual event capture for batch operations and shift reporting).

PI System's value in mining lies in its ability to create a unified, trusted data layer across the entire operation — from pit sensors through processing plant to port logistics — without requiring replacement of existing control systems. This data foundation enables downstream analytics including process optimisation, energy management, environmental compliance, and predictive maintenance. Mining clients including Vale, Rio Tinto, and Newmont rely on PI System as the backbone of their digital operations. Newmont reported $1.5M in annual fuel savings at a single PNG site using AVEVA digital tools built on PI System data.

The platform is now branded as AVEVA PI System but remains widely known by its legacy OSIsoft name. Nine of the top 10 mining companies use PI System as their operations data foundation.
